Week 1 Day 5 Activity 3 Going going......gone

Activity 3: Going, going….gone [10 points]

Over the years, scientists have made some surprising discoveries. One of
these discoveries is that we have entire cities (e.g. Jakarta, Indonesia and Venice, Italy) that are slowly sinking into the ocean. Scientists believe that, one day, the cities will disappear completely under the water. Yikes!
Some of the residents (people living in the cities) have taken pictures of their neighbourhoods and written stories about their lives in order to make a record of what ‘life was like’ in their city before it disappeared.
Let’s imagine that New Zealand was going to sink to the bottom of the ocean next week (Eek!). Before it sinks you are asked to write a blog post telling people what life was like in New Zealand in 2018.

On your blog, post a description of life in New Zealand in 2018. Please remember that the people who read your post will have never been to New Zealand or even seen a picture so it is your job to ‘paint a picture’ of New Zealand using your words. You can also post pictures, if you wish. Be sure to fully attribute the pictures.

New Zealand Life in 2018

Dear people of New Zealand,
It just came on the news that New Zealand is going to sink nextweek and I am so sad.I wish all you people reading this were able to see what New Zealand looked like before because it was beautiful. The beaches were beautiful and clean and the sand was light brown and felt nice on your toes in the summertime. At the beach in Summer you will see heaps of families and people swimming and heaps of kids playing with the sand. We had beautiful clean green grass and parks. Kids were laughing and playing on the swing and slides and climbing the monkey bars and other people use to walk their dogs and have picnics. New Zealand was big so you had to use a car to drive around so there were lots of cars everywhere. Some people used the bus and the taxis or trains or they can use bikes and lime scooters. Where I lived we had a big city and it had a really tall famous building called the skytower. At night it glows and its so tall and big.You can go inside the skytower and eat at the restaurants or go up and have a good view of the city. The city was a very busy place with lots of shops and people everywhere and at night time it was busy too and nearly everything was open.I wish you were able to see it because it was beautiful.I have some pictures of New Zealand so you can see a little bit of life in 2018.
Thanks,
Jahrey

Week 1 Day 4 Activity 1 Scaling new heights

Activity 1: Scaling New Heights [4 points]
Aotearoa New Zealand is a country of mountains and valleys, dense forests, and sparkling oceans. At the centre of the South Island sits the tallest mountain in the country, Aoraki Mt Cook. It is the place where Sir Edmund Hillary, the first man to reach the top (summit) of Mt Everest, learned how to climb mountains. It was pretty difficult for him, at first, but Sir Edmund Hillary did not give up and, in 1953, he achieved this dream of climbing Mt Everest. His face can now be found on the New Zealand $5 note!
Let’s imagine that you met Sir Edmund Hillary in real life and were able to interview him.

On your blog, post five questions that you would like to ask Sir Edmund Hillary about his life.

Meeting Sir Edmund Hillary

If I met Sir Edmund Hillary I would be really excited. If I met him my 5 questions for him would be....

1. Were you scared climbing Mt Everest?
2. Why did you want to climb to the top of the mountain?
3.When you were little did you like to climb trees or do rock climbing?
4. Was your family surprised and happy that you made it to the top of the mountain?
5. Would you climb the mountain again?

Week 1 Day 3 Activity 2 The secretive skink

Activity 2: The Secretive Skink [4 points]
We have a number of small lizards (geckos and skinks) living in New Zealand. One of the least common is the Chevron Skink. According to the Department of Conservation, Chevron Skinks live mostly on two islands - Great Barrier Island and Little Barrier Island. These islands are ‘animal reserves.’ Very few people, other than staff working for the New Zealand Department of Conservation (DOC), are allowed to live there. The DOC staff are called ‘Rangers.’ Their job is to protect the wildlife (animals and plants) living on the island.
Would you like to be a DOC ranger and live with the animals on Great Barrier Island?

On your blog list three pros (good things) and three cons (bad things) about working as a DOC ranger. At the bottom of your post, tell us whether you would like to be a DOC Ranger or not.

DOC RANGER

3 PROS:
1. Helping to protect all the animals on Great Barrier Island.
2. You get to see cool animals living at the Great Barrier Island.
3. Helping to protect all the plants on Great Barrier Island.

3 CONS:
1. It can be dangerous because you might get hurt from the animals.
2. It will be lonely because you have no family and friends.
3. There might be people hunting the animals and I might get hurt

Yes I would want to be a doc ranger so I can help other animals and other living things on the Island.I want to help keep the animals and plants safe because I love animals.I will miss my family and my friends and my dog Sage but I will still want to do the job to take care of the animals and making sure they are healthy and strong.

Week 1 Day 5 Activity 2 Living on the edge

Activity 2: Living on the Edge [4 points]
While it can get quite cold in New Zealand, it rarely drops below freezing (00C). Most of the time the temperature in New Zealand is pretty mild. This is not the case in the tundra. The tundra is an area of land (biome) that is cold, dry and completely treeless. Did you know that the average temperature in the tundra is -280C?
Over the past few years, however, the temperature in the tundra has been rising and the weather has been changing. Let’s imagine that your teacher decides to take you on a class trip to the tundra before the weather changes too much and you aren’t able to go.
On your blog, write a letter to your best friend or a family member telling them about your trip to the tundra. To earn full points your letter must have a greeting (eg. Dear…) followed by 5 – 6 sentences of information about what your experience.

Dear Ehmarze,

How are you?I had a cool experience lastweek and I wanted to tell about it.My teacher Miss Ulugia Pua took our class on a trip to the Tundra. Our class went on Monday and it was so so cold but lucky I packed heaps of warm clothes to wear. When we got there you could feel the cold on your face and see the cold air coming up from the ground. My nose was really sore and my head was really cold because I just got a haircut so I had to put my beanie on.It was like I was in a different planet becuase it was so empty. It didnt have heaps of trees or anything at the tundra and everything looked dead and not fun. There was some bushes but not heaps and it reminded me of fortnite how its land and those bushes where you hide.I wanted to see some birds or animals but I think they were cold to and they were all hiding somewhere.I wish you came with me to the tundra so you can see it to but I'm happy you didnt come because it was so cold. I hope you get to read this.Have a good day and see you soon.

Day 1 in the beginning

Activity 3: Ice, Ice Baby
Antarctica is the world’s coldest continent. Even though it is made up of ice, it is also the driest continent in the world. In fact, it hasn’t rained there for nearly 2 million years! It is home to many animals such as whales, seals, birds, and fish. There are no permanent human residents (people who live there all the time) in Antarctica, however scientists do visit and stay in Antarctica for a while to study it.

This year the airline, Air New Zealand, filmed their safety video in Antarctica. They used some fabulous actors from Hornby Primary School in Christchurch. Just like on aeroplanes, we also need to keep safe and be smart online. We need to think about the type of information we are sharing online, who we are sharing information with, and how to have a positive digital footprint.
On your blog, make a copy of this footprint and, inside the footprint, explain how you create a positive, digital footprint. What do you do to stay smart online?.

MY CYBER SMART TIPS.

Week 2 Day 3 Activity 1 First you sea me now you don't...

First You ‘Sea’ Me, Now You Don’t…

Activity 1: Night Owls [4 points]

Here in New Zealand we have many amazing and unique sea creatures, including penguins. The blue penguin, or kororā, is particularly special because it is the smallest penguin in the entire world! Blue penguins are typically found on the east coast of the South Island in places like Oamaru but they can be hard to spot as they rarely leave the water. If they do come onto land it is usually at night, when most of us are sound asleep! That’s because they are nocturnal. Not all of us, however, sleep all night. In fact, some people love to stay awake late into the evening. People who like to stay up late are called ‘night owls.’ Are you a night owl or are you an early riser, like me? I typically wake up every day around 6:00 a.m. and jump out of bed, ready to start the day!
On your blog, tell us whether you are a night owl or an early riser. Then, tell us about the rest of your family. Are they the same as you? .

Im a night owl I like to sleep late and sleep in too and my Nan is a night owl. My mum is a night owl she likes to sleep late and she likes to and wake up late to. My dad is a night owl and early riser he is both he stays up late and he wakes up early. My Nan stays up late too and she wakes up early like my dad. My little brother is a night owl and he wakes up early sometimes like me.

Week 2 Day 3 Activity 2 A local delicacy

Activity 2: A Local Delicacy

Whitebait is a very special fish in New Zealand. It is rumoured (believed) to be a very delicious fish. Some restaurants in New Zealand make dishes that feature whitebait, including whitebait fritters. Have you ever tried whitebait fritters? They are a favourite dish of many of my friends. I, personally, prefer foods from places like Mexico and Italy. Pizza and nachos are two of my all-time favourite foods! In fact, I often make homemade pizza with Aronui on Friday nights using the same ingredients (pizza base, tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, sun-dried tomatoes, chicken, red onion, basil and feta cheese) each time.
For this activity, please choose a favourite food and find a recipe for it.

On your blog, share a list of the ingredients that you need to make this food. You must type out the list of ingredients yourself (and not simply copy and paste it from a website) to earn full points.

PIZZA 😋😋😋🍕🍕🍕

One of my favourite food is PIZZA! Me and my brother make it sometimes with our Mum. I think the pizza we make at home is better because we can put heaps of cheese on it!! We go to the supermarket first to buy all the stuff and this is what we get......

3 pack pizza base
tomato pizza paste
mayonnaise
bbq sauce
mozzarella cheese
shredded chicken
pepperoni

You can add heaps of other things on top if you want to make it more colourful but I that's how I like mine just simple. And here are some pictures of me making pizzas in the school holidays lastyear.....

Day 2 Fabulous Flora Activity 2 Mighty Mangroves

Activity 2: Mighty Mangroves
Here in New Zealand we have a native tree called a Kiwi Mangrove. Kiwi Mangroves grow in shallow water (harbours). The largest mangrove or manawa forests in New Zealand are located in Northland and in Auckland. According to many environmental experts, they are one of the toughest and strongest trees in the world because they can survive in really harsh (difficult) conditions.
For this activity you are asked to think of someone who is very tough and strong. They can be someone who you know personally or they can be a character that you have read about in a book, seen in a movie, or on a television show.
On your blog, tell us about this person. Who are they? Why are they, in your opinion, so strong and tough?

MY DAD

My Dad is the strongest because he is tough and strong and he has cool tattoos and he does boxing
too. My Dads name is Sam. He trains me and my little brother. When he boxes he is fast as at punching and really good. My dad said boxing is only for exercise and self defense because violence is not good. I know my Dad is really smart too he can play the guitar and drums and he loves his fast cars. I want to be just like my dad when I'm older.

Day 2 Forest Life Activity 1 Giants among us

Activity 1: Giants Among Us

New Zealand has a really special environment. Many of the plants and trees found in New Zealand are not found anywhere else in the world. These plants and trees are endemic to our country.  In New Zealand, one of the largest and longest living endemic trees is the NZ Kauri tree. Kauri are mainly found in three regions of New Zealand: the Coromandel, Auckland and Northland. The largest Kauri tree in the country is in the Waipoua Forest in Northland. It is called Tāne Mahuta. Some people refer to it as the ‘Lord of the Forest.’
Thousands of people go to visit Tāne Mahuta every year. Would you like to be one of those people who got to see Tāne Mahuta in real life? Why or why not?
On your blog, tell us whether you would like to go and visit Tāne Mahuta one day. Be sure to tell us why you do (or do not) want to visit this endemic tree.

TANE MAHUTA
Yes i want to visit the endemic tree Tane Mahuta. I want to visit because i think it sounds cool and I would want to be one of the thousands of people who visit it. It must be a great tree to see if lots of people go there every year. I also want to go see how big the tree is and stand next to it and imagine how it would be if I was as tall as the tree. If i did visit the endemic tree it would be amazing and i will take photos of the endemic tree and show all my family and friends.

Week 1 Day 4 More than meets the eye Activity 2

Activity 2: Pancakes and Maple Syrup?
Aotearoa New Zealand is home to many spectacular sights and natural wonders. One of these is the Punakaiki Rocks and Blowholes located on the West Coast of the South Island. The Punakaiki rocks attract tourists from all over the world who are keen to see these amazing rock formations. Many people think that they look like pancakes stacked on top of one another. Pancakes are one of my favourite foods! They are delicious and pretty easy to make.
For this activity you are asked to choose one of your favourite foods. On your blog, write the name of your favourite food and then tell us how to make it. You may need to ask a family member, friend or Google (!) for help, if you do not normally make this food for yourself.
COCONUT CREAM PRAWNS
One of my favourite foods my Dad makes is coconut cream prawns! they are so yummy it is easy to make. Here is my Dads recipe enjoy 😋😋😋😋

Week 3 Day 1 Activity 1

DAY 1 A HEATED DEBATE
ACTIVITY 1 TOGS OR TRACKIES

New Zealand is a pretty lovely place to live, isn’t it? Apparently, New Zealand (NZ) is also a pretty lovely place to visit. In 2017 approximately 2-3 million people came to visit NZ as tourists. Some of them chose to come in the middle of our summer, while others braved it and came in the middle of winter! When do you think is the best time of year (season) to visit NZ?
If you wouldrlike some help making a decision, feel free to read the Go New Zealand website. It has lots of information about the seasons in NZ!
I, personally, encourage my friends and family from overseas to come and visit NZ in early spring. The weather is usually warm and dry and the tourist attractions, beaches and holiday spots are less busy than they are in the middle of summer.
On your blog, tell us what time of year you think is best for tourists for come and visit. Be sure to share at least three things that tourists could do while they were here in NZ.

I think the best time for people to visit my country would be summer time. The weather is nice and sunny and there are heaps of cool things to do. If it's really hot you can go for a drive to the beach and have a swim or go to the pools. They have cool as pools that my school goes to for trips its called jellico pools and it has a nice big pool outside with water slides for kids and adults too. If you come in the summer time you can even go up to the skytower it is really high up. You can go up and look down at our beautiful city and if your hungry you can eat at the restaurants there. The last place I would tell people to go see is the Museum because its free and you can learn lots of things about the New Zealand history and culture and theres heaps of interesting things there to do.

Day 2 Fabulous Flora Activity 1

DAY 2: Fabulous Flora

Activity 1: Weaving a Tall Tale…
There is a long history in New Zealand of collecting natural plants, including flax (harakeke), and using them to create cloaks, baskets (kete), mats, traps and ropes. Flax weaving is an art form. It can take years for people to perfect the art of weaving. Have you ever tried it?
For this activity, you are asked to watch a short video of someone weaving a fish (ika) out of flax.
On your blog, tell us whether or not you would like to try flax weaving. Does it interest you? Why or why not?

FLAX WEAVING

I watched the video of the weaving and I really like it. I think I would like to do it because I remember we did weaving before in our classroom and I think I was really good at it. We didnt use the flax though we used cardboard coloured paper but we weaved it like the video and it was really fun. It interest me because my nana and papa said when they lived in Samoa they made bags, fans, hats and even mats. BIg mats to sit on and even small ones to put their food on. I hope we do it again at school because it was fun and interesting.

Activity 3: Stranger than Fiction
Here on earth there are more than 298 000 different kinds (species) of plants. Some of these plants live on land and some live in the water. Follow this link to read about 10 of the strangest plant species in the world. When you are finished, choose two of the plants from the list.
On your blog, list three similarities and three differences between the two plants that you chose. To earn five extra bonus points, post a picture of both plants on your blog..

3 SIMILARITIES AND 3 DIFFERENCES

I chose the Baseball plant and the Baneberry plant because to me they look different and unique and cool. 3 similarities are-

1. Both of these plants are toxic. The baneberry fruit is toxic and the baseball plant is toxic aswell. The baseball plant can make you have really bad skin problems if you touch it.
2. My second one is that both plants have leaves. The baneberry plants has 3 leaves and the baseball plant has leaves but it has a very short lifespan.
3. My third one would be that both these plants are very unique and hard to find. You wouldn't find these plants in your backyard.

Both these plants are very unique. Here are my 3 differences I chose about the plants-

1. Both plants are found in different parts of the world. The baseball plant is found in South Africa and the Baneberry plant is found in the eastern parts of North America.
2. Both of these plants have really different shapes. The baseball looks exactly like its name and it is round. The baneberry is on long stalks it is round but its smaller in size.
3. The baseball plant is coloured green and red and the Baneberry plant is coloured white and green.
