Week 3 Up up and away Day 4 Activity 1

Activity 1: The Southern Lights [4 points]
Once in a while a very special event takes place in New Zealand. It is a show of beautiful, bright lights that appear in the sky over the South Island. The lights are called the ‘Aurora Australis’ or ‘Southern Lights.’ They are similar to the ‘Northern Lights’ that are often seen in places like Northern Canada, Iceland, Sweden, Finland and Denmark. The southern and northern lights are so stunning that they often leave people, who are watching them, speechless.
For this activity, you are to write a short acrostic word poem about the beautiful lights. Hazel has written an acrostic poem about summer to give you an example.
S - Sun outside,
U - Umbrellas in the sand.
M -  My friends and I, having fun,
M - Making sandcastles,
E - Enjoying ice cream on a hot day,
R - Racing to the beach!
On your blog, use the word ‘LIGHTS’ to write an acrostic poem about the Southern Lights. Be as creative as you can!

For more information and examples of acrostic poems, check out this poetry website.

  1. Ata Mārie Jahrey,

Ka pai! You have crafted a very creative and descriptive acrostic poem. I think my favourite line is twinkling lights winking at me, because it is a very poetic way of describing how they twinkle. It’s really cool how you have the different lines of the poem coloured, just like the Northern Lights are a range of different colours.

I am always in awe of the photos I see of the Northern Lights they are so beautiful and I can’t believe they are a natural phenomenon. A trip to Alaska to see the Northern Lights is definitely on my list of places to visit around the world. Would you want to go and see them in real life, one day?
