Day 1 In the beginning

ACTIVITY 1 LEGEND OF NZ

Activity 1: The Legend of New Zealand [4 points]

According to Māori mythology, much of Aotearoa New Zealand was formed when Māui, a powerful demigod, fished it out of the sea. Legend has it that Māui created a magical fish hook from the jawbone of his grandmother and that one day he took his hook, boarded a boat, and rode out into the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Once at sea, he threw his magical hook into the water and caught a fish. This ‘fish’ was actually the North Island of New Zealand! In honour of this legend, the North Island of New Zealand is sometimes referred to as Te Ika a Māui or ‘Māui’s fish’ and the South Island of New Zealand is sometimes referred to as Te Waka a Māui or ‘Māui’s canoe’.

MY TOP 3 FUN FACTS ABOUT NEW ZEALAND

1. The name of the country we live in is called New Zealand. in New Zealand our native language is Maori. There are lots of different places in New Zealand with Maori names but the one people should know is the Maori name for New Zealand. Aotearoa is the Maori name for New Zealand. Land of the long white cloud.

2. Some people like to call us New Zealanders or another word is Kiwis. Kiwi is the cool name we like to call ourselves but it is actually new Zealands native bird. The bird does not fly and lives in dark places.

3. In Auckland city where I live one of the cool attractions to see is the skytower. It is very high up at 328 metres high. If you go to the skytower you will get a beautiful view of the city. You can go to the
casino or restaurants and even bungy jump off the skytower.

  2. Kia ora Jahrey,

Happy New Year and welcome to the Summer Learning Journey. I am thrilled that you have decided to join us again this year and complete some activities. I am blown away with the effort you have put into this post and I am stoked to see that you have put the whole post in your own words. Well done!

You have shared three very interesting facts about New Zealand. In fact, I did not know that the Sky Tower is 328m tall. That is over six times taller than Tane Mahuta, which is known as the tallest Kauri tree. Have you been up the Sky Tower before? I have been up before and I love standing on the glass floor panels. This makes my heart skip a beat every time. Wouldn't it be funny if the staff at the Sky Tower decided to insert glass panels that have special effect which makes it looks like the glass is breaking. If you feel like it, have a look on youtube at the East Taihang Glasswalk. Would you attempt to walk on this skywalk?

I am very excited to see more great quality posts from you Jahrey. Keep up the awesome work.

    Kindest regards,
    Megan :)

My Mum and Dad promised to take me and my brother and sister if I work hard on the summer learn journey in the holidays.I love youtube Im going to search up the glasswalk after but I dont know if I would do it because I'm actually scared of heights.

      Bye Megan
