Day 1 Activity 1 The first settlers
It is widely believed that the first people to arrive in New Zealand came from Polynesia. Most historians believe that they landed in New Zealand over 700 years ago. Although they were originally from many different countries, these settlers learned to live together and, eventually, formed their own distinct culture known as ‘Māori.’ Māori have their own language, traditions, and culture.
Follow this link to read a short story about a famous man in Māori mythology – Maui. On your blog, post three facts that you learned about this interesting man. What other stories have you heard about Maui?
Three facts about Maui and the giant fish
- Maui's giant fish is known as the North Island of Aotearoa.
- Maui's canoe is known as the South Island.
- Maui weaved a strong fishing line from flax.
Hi Jahrey, I am Bridget from the Toki Pounamu cluster. I like how your are different, and when you look in the story you can see them easily in the story. If you want to get more points you can comment on my blog at http://lakebrunnerbridgetr.blogspot.co.nz/ Bye!
ReplyDeleteTalofa Jahrey,
ReplyDeletemy name is Cia. I am a Summer Learning Journey blogger who will be working with you over the summer break.
Thank you for sharing those facts about Māui. I like that you mentioned the fact that he weaved a strong rope made of flax. Perhaps next time you could focus a little more on sharing some facts about Māui himself, rather the story.
Think about Māui as a person, he did a lot of things his brothers could not or would not do, what does that tell you about Māui? What kind of person is he?
A wonderful start to the Summer Learning Journey Jahrey, I can’t wait to read more of your blog posts, keep up the great work!
Toe feiloa’i fo’i ('See you again' in Samoan),
